After training and then commissioning by the Archbishop, Extraordinary Ministers assist ordinary ministers in the distribution of Holy Communion to the faithful. This became necessary because of the reduced number of ordained clergy and the need to serve the faithful in a timely period. Extraordinary Ministers serve for three years. After three years, members must receive additional training and are re-commissioned by the Bishop. There are no set limits for the number of terms Extraordinary Ministers may serve and are required to follow the guidelines set forth by the Office of the Archbishop and Archdiocese of Atlanta, Georgia. Extraordinary Ministers meet annually, however, additional meetings are scheduled as needed.
